Based on extensive experience exploring nickel laterite in Indonesia and expanding upon early successful field reconnaissance works performed at several locations in Papua New Guinea, Solway Group Asia Pacific is undertaking a detailed exploration program in Papua New Guinea to confirm new major nickel laterite and chromite deposits.
Subject to confirmation of the geological resources in Papua New Guinea, these new deposits may serve as a future resource base for Solway Group's existing nickel ore processing operations. Alternatively, these resources may also supply ore material to the 3-rd parties to fill the void created by the Indonesian export ban.
Recent work is focused on in house studies for nickel mining and chromite processing operations in PNG
The potential deposits are located in Fergusson Island, Milne Bay Province and Morobe Province.
The overall potential resource of dry saprolite and limonite ores with grade as high as 1,6 % Ni for all areas is estimated at over 155 million tons
With grades reaching 7% of chromium oxide in ore, the potential resources can reach up to 204 + million of tons of ore suitable for processing and production of 45% grade chromite concentrate.
